Is Cheese Cake Gluten Free?

Is Cheese Cake Gluten Free?

Traditional cheesecake is often gluten-free in its filling, which typically consists of cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and flavorings. However, the crust of a cheesecake is usually made with graham crackers or cookies that contain gluten, so a standard cheesecake is not gluten-free unless specifically prepared with a gluten-free crust.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Gluten Free Alternatives
Ricotta-based cheesecake - Made with ricotta cheese instead of cream cheese, this alternative has a lighter texture and is naturally gluten-free when using a gluten-free crust or no crust at all. It's often flavored with lemon zest and vanilla.
No-bake cashew cheesecake - A vegan and gluten-free option made from soaked cashews blended with coconut milk, sweetener, and flavorings. It sets in the refrigerator and has a creamy texture similar to traditional cheesecake.
Greek yogurt cheesecake - This healthier alternative uses Greek yogurt as the main ingredient, resulting in a tangy, protein-rich dessert. It can be made with a gluten-free crust or served crustless for a lighter option.
Cottage cheese cheesecake - Using cottage cheese as the base, this alternative is lower in fat and higher in protein than traditional cheesecake. When blended smooth, it creates a creamy texture similar to classic cheesecake.
Pumpkin cheesecake mousse - A lighter, fluffier alternative made with pumpkin puree, cream cheese, and whipped cream. This gluten-free option can be served in individual portions or as a pie filling, often with a gluten-free graham cracker crust.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Does cheesecake contain gluten?
Traditional cheesecake typically contains gluten in its crust. The crust is usually made from graham crackers or cookies, which contain wheat flour. However, the cheesecake filling itself is generally gluten-free. Gluten-free cheesecake options are available, often using alternative crust ingredients like nuts or gluten-free cookies.
Is Philadelphia cream cheese cheesecake gluten free?
Philadelphia cream cheese itself is gluten-free. However, whether a cheesecake made with Philadelphia cream cheese is gluten-free depends on the other ingredients used. The crust of a traditional cheesecake often contains gluten from graham crackers or other wheat-based ingredients. To ensure a gluten-free cheesecake, you'd need to use a gluten-free crust and verify that all other ingredients are also free from gluten.
Is instant cheesecake mix gluten-free?
Instant cheesecake mix is not always gluten-free. Some brands may contain gluten-containing ingredients, while others offer gluten-free options. It's important to carefully check the ingredients list and look for certified gluten-free labels. If you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it's safest to choose a mix specifically labeled as gluten-free or make cheesecake from scratch using gluten-free ingredients.
Can celiacs eat gluten-free cake?
Yes, celiacs can eat gluten-free cake. Gluten-free cakes are specifically made without wheat, barley, rye, or other gluten-containing ingredients. These cakes are typically made with alternative flours like rice flour, almond flour, or coconut flour. As long as the cake is truly gluten-free and there's no cross-contamination during preparation, it should be safe for people with celiac disease to consume.
