Health Information
Benefits of Hershey Syrup

Cocoa contains antioxidants called flavonoids, which may have some health benefits.

Dark chocolate (with high cocoa content) has been linked to potential cardiovascular benefits.

Cocoa may help improve cognitive function and mood due to its caffeine and theobromine content.

The sweet taste can provide a temporary mood boost.

When used in moderation, it can be part of a balanced diet and contribute to overall enjoyment of food. It’s important to note that these potential benefits are primarily associated with cocoa itself, and Hershey’s Syrup is a processed product with added sugars. The high sugar content means it should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. For significant health benefits, it’s better to focus on whole foods and less processed sources of cocoa.

Who should avoid Hershey Syrup

Diabetics or those with insulin resistance, due to its high sugar content

People with corn allergies or sensitivities, as it contains corn syrup

Individuals with lactose intolerance, if consuming the chocolate variety which contains milk ingredients

Those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet, due to its high carbohydrate content

People trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, as it’s high in calories and added sugars

Individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), as it contains phenylalanine

Those with caffeine sensitivities, particularly for the chocolate variety which contains some caffeine

People with certain heart conditions who need to limit their sugar intake

Individuals with dental issues or those prone to cavities, due to its high sugar content

Those following a vegan diet, as some varieties contain milk ingredients (though Hershey’s does offer some vegan options)

People with specific religious or cultural dietary restrictions that prohibit certain ingredients

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hershey's celiac safe?
Hershey's does not certify any of their products as gluten-free. However, many of their plain chocolate bars and kisses are made without gluten-containing ingredients. It's important to always check labels, as ingredients and manufacturing processes can change. For those with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, it's safest to choose products specifically labeled as gluten-free.
What syrup is gluten-free?
Most pure maple syrup is naturally gluten-free. Corn syrup and agave nectar are also typically gluten-free options. However, some flavored syrups or those with additives may contain gluten, so it's important to check labels. Generally, syrups made from fruits, honey, or sugar without additional ingredients are safe for those avoiding gluten.
Why is syrup not gluten-free?
Syrup itself is generally gluten-free, as it's typically made from sugar or corn. However, some syrups may contain gluten due to added flavorings or other ingredients. Cross-contamination during processing can also introduce gluten into otherwise gluten-free syrups. It's important for those with gluten sensitivities to check labels carefully and choose certified gluten-free options when necessary.
Which Hershey Kisses are not gluten-free?
Most Hershey's Kisses are gluten-free. However, some flavored varieties may contain gluten ingredients.
