What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Gluten Free Alternatives
Rice Beer- Brewed using rice instead of barley or wheat, rice beer is light, crisp, and often has a clean, subtle flavor. It's a common gluten-free option in many Asian countries and is gaining popularity worldwide.
Buckwheat Beer- Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and is gluten-free. Buckwheat beer has a distinct, earthy flavor with nutty undertones. It often has a darker color and fuller body compared to traditional lagers.
Millet Beer- Millet is a gluten-free grain that produces a beer with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Millet beers can range from light and crisp to more full-bodied, depending on the brewing process and additional ingredients used.
Hard Cider- While not technically a beer, hard cider is a popular gluten-free alternative for beer drinkers. Made from fermented apple juice, ciders can range from dry to sweet and offer a refreshing, fruity flavor profile. Some craft ciders are even hopped to provide a more beer-like experience.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Are any lagers gluten-free?
Most traditional lagers are not gluten-free, as they are typically made with barley which contains gluten. However, there are some gluten-free lagers available on the market. These are usually made with alternative grains like sorghum, rice, or corn instead of barley. It's important for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity to carefully check labels or consult with breweries to ensure a lager is truly gluten-free.
Can you drink lager if you are gluten intolerant?
Traditional lager typically contains gluten and is not suitable for those with gluten intolerance. However, there are now gluten-free lager options available on the market. These are made with alternative grains like sorghum or rice instead of barley. It's important for gluten-intolerant individuals to carefully check labels and choose beers specifically labeled as gluten-free.
Which common beer is gluten-free?
Gluten-free beers are becoming increasingly common, but most traditional beers contain gluten. However, there are some widely available gluten-free options on the market. One of the most popular gluten-free beers is Redbridge, which is produced by Anheuser-Busch and made from sorghum. Other common gluten-free beers include Ghostfish Brewing Company's various offerings, Green's gluten-free beers, and Omission Beer, though it's important to note that Omission is technically gluten-removed rather than entirely gluten-free.
How much gluten is in lager beer?
The amount of gluten in lager beer can vary depending on the specific brand and brewing process. Generally, most lagers contain some gluten, as they are typically made with barley, which is a gluten-containing grain. The gluten content in regular lagers is usually estimated to be around 1-2 parts per million (ppm). However, there are gluten-free lager options available for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
