Is Moonshine Gluten Free?

Is Moonshine Gluten Free?

Moonshine, being traditionally made from corn, is typically gluten-free. However, it’s important to note that some modern moonshine products may contain added flavors or ingredients that could potentially introduce gluten, so it’s always best to check the specific product’s ingredients or contact the manufacturer if you have gluten sensitivities.

Health Information
Benefits of Moonshine

Gluten-Free (Corn-Based Varieties):
Corn-based moonshine is naturally gluten-free, which makes it a suitable option for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease. This is an advantage for those who need to avoid gluten but still want to enjoy distilled spirits. However, it’s essential to check the ingredients or manufacturing process, especially with homemade versions, to ensure there is no cross-contamination.

Low in Carbohydrates:
When consumed neat (without added mixers), moonshine is low in carbohydrates and contains no sugar, making it an option for those who are watching their carbohydrate intake. Like other distilled spirits, it does not contain significant amounts of carbohydrates or sugars unless mixed with sweetened drinks.

Social Enjoyment and Bonding:
Moonshine, like other alcoholic beverages, is often enjoyed in social settings. Sharing a glass of moonshine with friends or family can foster social connections, enhance social bonding, and contribute to positive experiences. Social interactions are important for mental well-being, and moonshine can be part of that when consumed responsibly.

Stress Relief and Relaxation:
Like other alcoholic beverages, moonshine can offer temporary relaxation and stress relief when consumed in moderation. Alcohol acts as a central nervous system depressant, which can help reduce feelings of anxiety and promote relaxation. However, relying on alcohol for stress management is not a healthy long-term solution.

Antibacterial Properties (High Alcohol Content):
Moonshine, like other high-proof alcohols, has strong antibacterial properties due to its high alcohol content. Historically, strong spirits were used for cleaning wounds or sterilizing medical instruments. While this is not a recommended use for modern spirits, the alcohol content in moonshine can help kill certain bacteria, although its use as a disinfectant should be left to properly formulated products.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Frequently
Asked Questions 1

Can celiacs drink moonshine?
Celiac disease requires strict avoidance of gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, and rye. Moonshine is typically made from corn, which is naturally gluten-free. However, there's a risk of cross-contamination if the equipment used to make moonshine has been used for gluten-containing grains. To be safe, celiacs should only consume moonshine that's certified gluten-free or made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
Is Ole Smoky Peach moonshine gluten-free?
Ole Smoky Peach moonshine is generally considered to be gluten-free. Moonshine is typically made from corn, which does not contain gluten. However, it's always best to check the specific product label or contact the manufacturer directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information. While the base spirit should be gluten-free, there's a small possibility that flavorings or other additives could contain gluten.
What alcohol is not gluten-free?
Most distilled alcohols are gluten-free, even if made from gluten-containing grains. However, beer is typically not gluten-free as it's made from barley or wheat. Some flavored spirits or liqueurs may contain gluten additives. Malt beverages and certain wine coolers may also contain gluten.
What alcohol is safe for celiacs?
Celiacs can safely consume distilled alcoholic beverages like vodka, gin, whiskey, and rum, as the distillation process removes gluten proteins. Wine is also generally safe for celiacs, as it's made from grapes. However, beer is typically not safe unless specifically labeled as gluten-free, as it's usually made with barley or wheat. It's important for celiacs to always check labels and be cautious of flavored or mixed alcoholic drinks that may contain gluten-containing additives.
