Is Pop Gluten Free?

Generally speaking, most types of soda pop are gluten-free as they do not contain wheat, barley, rye, or other gluten-containing ingredients. However, it’s always important to check the label or contact the manufacturer for specific products, especially for flavored or specialty sodas that might contain additives derived from gluten sources.

Health Information
Benefits of Pop

Quick Energy Boost (from Sugar)
Regular (non-diet) pop contains sugar, which provides a quick source of energy. The high sugar content can raise blood glucose levels rapidly, offering a temporary energy boost when you feel tired or sluggish. This can be helpful for individuals who need a fast pick-me-up, such as athletes needing a quick energy source before or during physical exertion.

Hydration (If Non-Caffeinated)
While water is the best source of hydration, non-caffeinated pop can contribute to your daily fluid intake. It’s important to note that pop should not be relied upon as a primary source of hydration due to its sugar and potential additives, but consuming it occasionally can still help you stay hydrated, especially if it’s non-caffeinated and consumed in moderation.

Caffeine Boost (for Caffeinated Varieties)
Some types of pop, like cola or certain energy drinks, contain caffeine, which is a natural stimulant. Caffeine can help improve alertness, increase focus, and reduce feelings of fatigue. People often turn to caffeinated pop for a quick pick-me-up during the day to enhance mental and physical performance.

Temporary Appetite Suppression
Carbonated beverages, including pop, can cause a feeling of fullness due to the carbonation. The bubbles in pop can lead to a temporary suppression of appetite, which might help reduce cravings or prevent overeating in the short term.

Taste and Flavor Variety
Pop comes in many flavors, ranging from cola to fruit flavors, providing a wide variety of options to satisfy different taste preferences. The diversity in flavors allows individuals to enjoy their favorite beverages and can offer a satisfying, refreshing experience, especially when paired with meals.

Who should avoid Pop

People with diabetes or those at risk of developing diabetes should avoid regular pop due to its high sugar content.

Regular pop is calorie-dense and high in added sugars, which can contribute to weight gain. For individuals who are trying to lose weight or manage their weight, avoiding sugary beverages like pop can help reduce calorie intake and prevent weight gain.

Pop, particularly carbonated beverages, can exacerbate acid reflux or GERD symptoms by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. The acidity in sodas can further irritate the lining of the esophagus, worsening heartburn and discomfort.

Pop is highly acidic, and both regular and diet sodas can contribute to tooth enamel erosion and cavities. The combination of sugar and acidity can promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, leading to tooth decay.

People with high blood pressure should avoid sugary drinks, including regular pop, as excessive sugar intake is associated with increased blood pressure and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Regular consumption of sugary and highly acidic drinks like pop can worsen kidney health, particularly in individuals with pre-existing kidney issues. The phosphoric acid found in many sodas has been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones and may strain the kidneys over time.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).
