Health Information
Benefits of Proper 12

Low in Carbohydrates and Sugar (When Consumed Neat)
Proper No. Twelve whiskey, like most distilled spirits, contains no carbohydrates or sugars when consumed neat (straight) or with low-calorie mixers like soda water. This makes it a suitable option for those who are following a low-carb or keto diet, or for individuals watching their sugar intake.

Antioxidant Properties
Whiskey, including Proper No. Twelve, contains antioxidants such as ellagic acid, which comes from the oak barrels used in the aging process. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and potentially protecting cells from damage. While the amount of antioxidants in whiskey is low compared to fruits and vegetables, it still provides some protective compounds.

Relaxation and Stress Relief
Whiskey, like Proper No. Twelve, can promote relaxation and stress relief when consumed in moderation. Alcohol acts as a central nervous system depressant, which can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, allowing you to unwind after a long day. Many people enjoy whiskey in social settings or during moments of leisure, which contributes to relaxation and overall well-being.

Digestive Aid (in Small Amounts)
Whiskey has traditionally been consumed as a digestif, a drink enjoyed after a meal to aid digestion. Some believe that whiskey can help stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, easing digestion, especially after heavy meals. While the scientific support for this is limited, some people find that small amounts of whiskey have a soothing effect on the stomach.

Fewer Additives (Compared to Other Alcoholic Drinks)
Proper No. Twelve is crafted through a natural distillation and aging process, containing fewer additives compared to many flavored alcoholic beverages or cocktails. Its rich flavor comes from aging in oak barrels, rather than artificial sweeteners or flavors, making it a more natural option for those looking to avoid heavily processed drinks.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Frequently
Asked Questions 1

Which whiskeys are gluten-free?
Most distilled spirits, including whiskey, are considered gluten-free. The distillation process removes gluten proteins from the final product, even if the whiskey is made from gluten-containing grains like barley or rye. However, some people with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity may still react to trace amounts that could potentially remain. For the strictest gluten-free diet, it's safest to choose whiskeys made from naturally gluten-free grains like corn (bourbon) or sorghum.
Is Proper whiskey gluten-free?
Proper whiskey is generally considered gluten-free. The distillation process removes gluten proteins from the final product. However, some people with severe gluten sensitivities may still react to trace amounts. It's always best to check with the specific brand or consult a doctor if you have concerns.
Can celiacs drink single malt whisky?
Celiac disease sufferers can generally drink single malt whisky safely. This is because the distillation process removes gluten proteins from the final product. Single malt whisky is made from malted barley, but the gluten is left behind in the distillation process. However, celiacs should still exercise caution and consult their doctor, as individual sensitivities can vary.
What is proper 12 whiskey made of?
Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey is made from a blend of grain and single malt Irish whiskeys. It is triple distilled in copper pot stills and aged for a minimum of three years in bourbon barrels. The whiskey is produced at the oldest licensed distillery in Ireland, located in County Antrim. Proper No. Twelve was created by MMA fighter Conor McGregor in collaboration with master distiller David Elder.
