Is Rye Bourbon Gluten Free?

Is Rye Bourbon Gluten Free?

Rye bourbon is not gluten-free because it is made from rye grain, which contains gluten. While the distillation process can remove most gluten proteins, there may still be trace amounts present, and it is not considered safe for those with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Gluten Free Alternatives
Corn Whiskey:Made primarily from corn (at least 80%), this whiskey has a sweeter flavor profile than rye bourbon. It's naturally gluten-free and often has a smooth, mellow taste.
Sorghum Whiskey:Crafted from sorghum grain, this alternative offers a unique flavor profile that can be slightly sweet with hints of caramel and spice. It's completely gluten-free and gaining popularity among whiskey enthusiasts.
Rice Whiskey:Distilled from rice, this whiskey tends to have a lighter, cleaner taste compared to traditional bourbons. It's naturally gluten-free and often used in Asian-inspired cocktails.
Potato Vodka:While not a whiskey, potato vodka can be a gluten-free base for cocktails typically made with bourbon. It has a smooth, clean taste and can be infused with various flavors to mimic whiskey characteristics.
Tequila:Made from the blue agave plant, tequila is naturally gluten-free. While its flavor profile differs from bourbon, aged (añejo) tequilas can offer complex, woody notes that appeal to whiskey drinkers.

Frequently
Asked Questions 1

Which bourbons are not gluten-free?
All true bourbon whiskeys are naturally gluten-free. Bourbon is made primarily from corn, which does not contain gluten. The distillation process also removes any traces of gluten from other grains that may be used. However, some flavored bourbons or bourbon-based liqueurs may contain added ingredients that include gluten, so it's always best to check the label if you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
What bourbon is 100% gluten-free?
All bourbon is inherently gluten-free. This is because bourbon must be made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn, with the remainder typically being rye, barley, or wheat. The distillation process removes all proteins, including gluten, from the final product. Therefore, any bourbon, regardless of brand, can be considered 100% gluten-free.
Is Bulleit rye bourbon gluten-free?
Bulleit Rye is not a bourbon, but a rye whiskey. However, like bourbon, Bulleit Rye is generally considered gluten-free. The distillation process removes gluten proteins from the final product. Those with severe gluten sensitivities should still exercise caution and consult the manufacturer for definitive information.
Is rye ok for gluten intolerance?
Rye is not safe for people with gluten intolerance. Like wheat and barley, rye contains gluten proteins that can trigger symptoms in those with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Individuals with gluten intolerance should avoid rye and products containing rye flour or rye ingredients. It's important for those with gluten intolerance to carefully read food labels and choose gluten-free alternatives instead.
