Is Rye Whiskey Gluten Free?

Is Rye Whiskey Gluten Free?

Rye whiskey is generally considered gluten-free, despite being made from rye grain which contains gluten. This is because the distillation process removes gluten proteins, resulting in a final product that typically contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten, which is the threshold for a product to be labeled gluten-free in many countries.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Gluten Free Alternatives
Corn Whiskey:Made primarily from corn (at least 80%), this whiskey has a sweeter flavor profile than rye. It's often unaged or minimally aged, resulting in a clear or light golden color.
Sorghum Whiskey:Crafted from sorghum grain, this whiskey offers a unique flavor profile with notes of caramel and vanilla. It's naturally gluten-free and provides a smooth drinking experience.
Rice Whiskey:Distilled from rice, this alternative has a lighter, cleaner taste compared to traditional whiskeys. It's popular in Asian countries and is gaining traction globally as a gluten-free option.
Potato Vodka:While not a whiskey, potato vodka can be a suitable alternative for mixed drinks. It's distilled from potatoes, making it naturally gluten-free, and has a smooth, creamy texture.
Tequila:Made from the blue agave plant, tequila is inherently gluten-free. It offers a distinct flavor profile with earthy, sweet, and sometimes peppery notes, making it a versatile substitute in cocktails traditionally made with rye whiskey.

Frequently
Asked Questions 1

What whiskeys are not gluten-free?
Whiskeys made from gluten-containing grains like barley, rye, and wheat are not considered gluten-free. This includes most traditional Scotch whiskies, Irish whiskeys, and American bourbons. Some experts argue that the distillation process removes gluten proteins, but there may still be trace amounts present. For those with severe gluten sensitivities or celiac disease, it's safest to avoid these whiskeys and opt for alternatives made from gluten-free grains like corn or sorghum.
Is rye OK for gluten intolerance?
Rye is not considered safe for people with gluten intolerance. Like wheat and barley, rye contains gluten proteins that can trigger symptoms in those with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Individuals with gluten intolerance should avoid consuming rye and products made with rye flour. There are gluten-free alternatives available for those who need to eliminate rye from their diet.
What whiskey is 100% gluten-free?
Whiskey made from 100% corn, such as some bourbons, is gluten-free. Additionally, any whiskey distilled from non-gluten grains like sorghum or rice is naturally gluten-free. Some experts argue that the distillation process removes gluten from all whiskeys, regardless of the grains used. However, for those with severe gluten sensitivities, it's safest to stick with whiskeys explicitly labeled as gluten-free or made from non-gluten grains.
Does Crown Royal rye have gluten?
Crown Royal rye whisky is generally considered gluten-free. The distillation process removes gluten proteins from the final product. However, some people with severe gluten sensitivities may still react to trace amounts. It's always best to consult with a doctor if you have concerns about consuming whisky with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
