Generally, pure salted caramel is gluten-free as it’s typically made from sugar, cream, butter, and salt, which do not contain gluten. However, it’s important to check the ingredients list or with the manufacturer for any specific salted caramel product, as some may contain additives or be produced in facilities that process gluten-containing ingredients, potentially leading to cross-contamination.

Mood enhancement: The sugar in caramel can trigger the release of serotonin, potentially improving mood temporarily.
Small amounts of minerals: The salt in salted caramel provides trace amounts of essential minerals like sodium and chloride.
Potential antioxidants: If dark chocolate is included, it may provide some antioxidants.
Energy boost: The sugar content can provide a quick source of energy.
Calcium and protein: If made with milk or cream, it may contain small amounts of calcium and protein. However, it’s important to note that these benefits are minimal compared to the high sugar and calorie content of salted caramel. Consuming it in excess can lead to negative health effects, such as weight gain and increased risk of tooth decay. It should be enjoyed as an occasional treat rather than for its health benefits.
Individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes, due to its high sugar content
People with high blood pressure, as it contains a significant amount of salt
Those on a low-sodium diet for health reasons
Individuals with heart conditions who need to monitor their salt and sugar intake
People with cavities or dental issues, as the sticky nature of caramel can be harmful to teeth
Those with a history of kidney stones, as the high sugar content may increase risk
Individuals trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, due to its high calorie content
People with certain gastrointestinal conditions that are aggravated by high-fat or sugary foods
Those with a known allergy to any of the ingredients commonly found in salted caramel (e.g., dairy, soy)
Individuals following a strict vegan or dairy-free diet, as most salted caramel contains butter or cream
Young children, as it can be a choking hazard and is high in sugarRemember, moderation is key for most people, and occasional consumption may be fine for some individuals in these groups after consulting with a healthcare professional.

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.
Relief from Gluten Sensitivity
In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.
This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by Royal DSM and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .
On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?
Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).
How Tolerase® G Works
It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).
Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).
