Is Smirnoff Gluten Free?

Is Smirnoff Gluten Free?

Yes, Smirnoff vodka is generally considered gluten-free. This is because it is distilled from corn, which does not contain gluten, and the distillation process itself would remove any trace gluten even if wheat, barley, or rye were used in production.

Health Information
Benefits of Smirnoff

Smirnoff is a vodka, which is typically lower in calories compared to other alcoholic beverages like beer or cocktails.

It contains no carbohydrates, making it a potential choice for those following low-carb diets (when consumed in moderation).

Vodka, including Smirnoff, is gluten-free, which may be beneficial for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Fewer Additives and Purity
Skyy Vodka is known for its quadruple distillation and triple filtration process, which results in a purer product with fewer impurities. This filtration process reduces impurities like congeners, which are compounds that can contribute to hangovers. As a result, Skyy Vodka is considered a cleaner spirit, which may cause fewer negative effects (such as hangovers) compared to lower-quality spirits with more impurities, though this varies by individual and consumption level.

Digestive Aid (in Small Quantities)
Vodka is sometimes consumed as a digestif, which is a drink taken after meals to help with digestion. Some believe that vodka can stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, potentially aiding digestion, especially after heavy meals. While this benefit is mostly anecdotal, small amounts of vodka may have a soothing effect on the stomach for some individuals.

What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Frequently
Asked Questions 1

Can celiacs drink Smirnoff vodka?
Celiacs can generally drink Smirnoff vodka safely. Smirnoff vodka is made from corn and is gluten-free. The distillation process removes gluten proteins, making it safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. However, flavored varieties should be checked individually as some may contain gluten-containing additives.
Why is Smirnoff Ice not gluten-free?
Smirnoff Ice is not gluten-free because it contains malt. Malt is derived from barley, which is a gluten-containing grain. While the distillation process used to make vodka typically removes gluten, Smirnoff Ice is a malt beverage that undergoes a different production process. Therefore, it retains gluten from the malt and is not safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
Are Smirnoff shooters gluten-free?
Most Smirnoff shooters are considered gluten-free. The base alcohol used in Smirnoff products is typically made from corn, which does not contain gluten. However, some flavored varieties may contain additives that could potentially introduce gluten. It's always best to check the specific product label or contact the manufacturer for the most up-to-date information on gluten content.
Which vodkas are not gluten-free?
Most vodkas are considered gluten-free, even if made from gluten-containing grains, due to the distillation process. However, some vodkas may contain trace amounts of gluten if flavorings or additives are introduced after distillation. Vodkas to be cautious of include those made with undisclosed ingredients or those that specifically add wheat-based ingredients after distillation. It's always best for individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity to check with the manufacturer or choose vodkas explicitly labeled as gluten-free.
