What is Tolerase® G?

A new Approach for People with Gluten Sensitivity:
Explore the Science and Benefits of Tolerase® G.

Relief from Gluten Sensitivity

In the fight against gluten, there is a unique supplement that stands out: Little Helpers anti-gluten pills with 100% Tolerase® G.

This specific enzyme, Tolerase® G, a patented endopeptidase specific for proline, was developed by  Royal DSM  and has been scientifically proven to be effective in breaking down gluten residues ( 1) . Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP), an enzyme closely related to Tolerase® G, can break down gluten so effectively that it barely reaches the duodenum, potentially eliminating gluten toxicity ( 2) ( 3 ) .

On this page we explain why we are so enthusiastic about this supplement, supported by scientific research.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a group of proteins found primarily in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. These complex proteins give shape, strength, and texture to bread and other grain products. However, gluten is difficult to digest because it is rich in proline, a non-essential amino acid. This is why about 13% of the world’s population is sensitive to gluten in their diet (1).

How Tolerase® G Works

It is important to note that Tolerase G is designed to have optimal activity in the difficult conditions of the stomach. Its effectiveness on the digestion of gluten in the stomach and duodenum has been scientifically proven ( 1 ).

Studies have shown that a newly identified prolyl endoprotease derived from Aspergillus niger can effectively break down gluten proteins. This enzyme works optimally at a pH of 4–5, remains stable at pH 2, and is completely resistant to digestion by pepsin ( 2 ). Furthermore, research has shown that Aspergillus niger prolyl endoprotease (AN-PEP) accelerates the breakdown of gluten in the stomach so much that very little gluten reaches the duodenum ( 3 ). This suggests that co-administration of AN-PEP with a meal containing gluten could potentially eliminate gluten toxicity, allowing people to (occasionally) abandon their strict gluten-free diet ( 3 ).

Gluten Free Alternatives
Pea Protein Isolate:A plant-based protein derived from yellow peas. It's highly digestible, rich in essential amino acids, and has a neutral taste. Pea protein is often used in vegan protein powders and as a meat substitute.
Rice Protein Isolate:Made from brown rice, this protein is hypoallergenic and easily digestible. It's lower in lysine compared to other protein sources but is still a good option for those avoiding gluten and animal products.
Hemp Protein:Derived from hemp seeds, this protein is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and contains all nine essential amino acids. It has a slightly nutty flavor and is often used in smoothies and baked goods.
Soy Protein Isolate:A highly refined protein from soybeans, containing all essential amino acids. It's versatile and commonly used in protein bars, meat alternatives, and dairy-free products. However, some people avoid soy due to potential allergies or concerns about phytoestrogens.
Potato Protein:A lesser-known option, potato protein is derived from the liquid byproduct of potato starch production. It's hypoallergenic, easily digestible, and has a high biological value. It's often used in sports nutrition products and as a food additive.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Does wheat protein contain gluten?
Yes, wheat protein contains gluten. Gluten is a protein naturally found in wheat, as well as other grains like barley and rye. In fact, gluten is the primary protein component in wheat. People with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity need to avoid wheat protein and other gluten-containing foods.
Does isolate protein have gluten?
Isolated protein typically does not contain gluten. Gluten is a protein found primarily in wheat, barley, and rye. Most isolated proteins come from sources like whey, casein, soy, pea, or rice, which are naturally gluten-free. However, it's always important to check the specific product label and manufacturing process to ensure there's no cross-contamination if you have gluten sensitivities.
Is wheat protein the same as vital wheat gluten?
Wheat protein and vital wheat gluten are closely related but not exactly the same. Vital wheat gluten is a concentrated form of wheat protein that has been isolated from wheat flour. While wheat protein refers to all the proteins found in wheat, vital wheat gluten specifically consists of the gluten proteins. Vital wheat gluten is commonly used as an additive in baking and cooking to improve texture and elasticity in dough.
Can celiacs have wheat protein in hair products?
Celiacs generally need to avoid ingesting gluten, including wheat protein. However, topical application of wheat protein in hair products is typically considered safe for most celiacs. This is because gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin. Nevertheless, those with severe celiac disease or wheat allergies may want to avoid wheat protein in hair products out of an abundance of caution.
